Interview with Vice President Leni Robredo Day 1 of Vaccine Express in Manila City

Interview with Vice President Leni Robredo Day 1 of Vaccine Express in Manila City

Galing na tayong Tuguegarao and Palawan. So sa Bicol nagsa-spike ngayon so nagse-set up na rin tayo.

[laughs]

VP LENI: Iyong sa akin kasi siyempre iyong deadline natin at the very latest end of September. Pero kailangan nang isingit-singit siya, iyong pag-work on it. So hopefully… hopefully marami iyong mag-agree na to come together para mapag-usapan. Isang bagay iyon na tina-trabaho ko ngayon. Pero mayroon pa tayong until September to do that.

Paano ba iyan? Kasi ang oposisyon sana unified daw talaga pero with this, ano pong masasabi niyo roon?

REPORTER 3: Ma’am, I have a question, sorry: when we speak of crisis, especially during this pandemic, we see the critical role that women play, right? I mean, it’s never been harder for women, for mothers, and how important is it that women play a greater role in responding to the crisis and also in leadership that their voices are heard and not dominated by male leadership voices?

VP LENI: Nakikita kasi natin iyan kung gaano siya kahalaga in countries where women play critical leadership roles. Makikita natin how responsive their policies are and that’s our wish for the country: na sana iyong mga kababaihan mabigyan ng mas maraming boses. Kasi actually, women are bearing the brunt of this pandemic na hindi nakikita ng lahat.

So iyong opisina namin, talagang ni-reassess namin iyong aming programs. Ni-reassess namin iyong aming budget. We’re allocating more funds now for livelihood subsidies—livelihood subsidies not just for women pero pati mga lalaki.

REPORTER 3: Gaano ka-importante, Ma’am, iyong role ng leadership ng women na every decision-making process may female leadership na nandiyan at the forefront, making decisions in behalf of, not just women, but also children, minorities, LGBTQIA+. You know, we see that women are much more sensitive when it comes to decision-making process. We see that in your projects. Do you feel that there is a need for female voices and that leadership?

VP LENI: Sobra. Sobra. Kami, karamihan sa mga projects namin we’re dealing with mostly women and we have noticed na kapag babae iyong binibigyan ng boses, iyong pinakamaliliit na detalye, nabibigyan ng pansin. Siguro ang dahilan diyan because also of the roles that they are playing in our everyday lives na hindi nakikita ng mga kalalakihan. It’s not that women are better pero siguro women are more sensitive, women are more… parang they give more premium to the littlest of details dahil sila iyong nakakakita, eh.

REPORTER 3: Yeah, and they define strength differently.

VP LENI: Yes, and hindi lang. Pinapakita according to studies na iyong mga kababaihan tend to underestimate themselves. So because of that, they are more consultative. They listen more dahil tingin nila iyong inadequacies actually nagagamit siya for good, in the sense na kapag iyong leadership mas consultative, mas inclusive, iyong klase ng policies na nagagawa niya, mas empowering din.

REPORTERS: Thank you, Ma’am! Thank you, VP.
