At 10:00 am, the Vice President attended an advocacy forum entitled Understanding the Terrains of Social Developmentin UST, Manila. The event was organized by the College of Nursing in partnership with UST Simbahayan Community Development Office. It was intended for UST College of Nursing students and other UST student leaders. It aims to motivate and inspire nursing students to help in the social transformation of their partner communities.
In her speech, the Vice President emphasized the importance of empathy in trying to address the different needs of society. It is in empathy that one will know how to help the marginalized. “Empathy is very much different from sympathy. Sympathy is an emotional response to what you hear; empathy is an active response to what you feel. It goes beyond just feeling pity; it explores the realm of possibilities to the solutions to problems that are found.”
At 3:15 pm, the Vice President went to the Kongreso ng Taumbayanin Asian Social Institute, Malate, Manila. The event was jointly convened by the Asian Social Institute (ASI), the National Secretariat for Social Action (NASSA) of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), Kaya Natin! Movement for Good Governance and Ethical Leadership, Samahang Laico, ChaCharot: Samahan ng Tutol sa Charter Change, and the Urban Poor Associates (UPA). It aims to demand a resetting of national priorities and to reiterate the fundamental tenets of democracy—citizen participation, especially of the poor. It gathered the articulate voices of the basic sectors and the marginalized, joined by their allies among professionals, academe, students, business, and the church.
In her speech, the Vice President talked about issues the country is currently facing and how the future is filled with uncertainties. But despite all these, it is the best time to unite to create a better society. “Ang sagot po natin diyan—gaya ng pagpapakinig ko sa mga pinag-usapan niyo kanina—kailangan po nating isantabi ang ating mga pagkakaiba, upang buong lakas na harapin ang mas malaki at darating pang mga laban. Patuloy po tayong aabante, alang-alang sa ating mga manggagawa at ordinaryong mamamayan. Sikapin po nating gisingin ang mga nagbibingi-bingihan at nagbubulag-bulagan, at bigyan ng boses ang ating mga kababayan.”
