Vice President Leni Robredo set to improve lives of Mindoreños
Vice President Leni Robredo is scheduled to visit the island of Oriental Mindoro on Thursday, March 3, to meet volunteers and supporters, fisherfolk, religious leaders, political allies and representatives from different sectors.
Robredo’s goal should she be elected President is to improve the quality of life and living standards for all Filipinos, and has identified three areas to focus on for Mindoreños.
She’s pledged to strengthen agriculture, the region's primary source of income, and says she will make sure loans and other financial mechanisms reach even those living on the fringes of society, to help farmers deal with climate change. Since typhoons frequently strike Mindoro, it’s critical to invest in climate resilient crops and infrastructure.
A large percentage of the people of Mindoro make a living from fishing so Robredo will meet with fisherfolk in Brgy. Wawa, Calapan City to discuss their issues including how to modernize their fishing methods.
With eco-tourism also a source of income in the region, Robredo will prioritize tourism recovery, and has called the industry “essential” to the country’s economic recovery. She’s an advocate for green transportation to protect the environment, and is pushing for technical assistance to local governments to make green development a pillar of their local development plans.
Robredo’s track record has shown that she initiates projects that people need most. For example, Robredo worked with a private foundation to bring solar kits to barangays Misong and Tagumpay in Oriental Mindoro Robredo to bring light to these remote communities.
Through her Angat Buhay Program, the Office of the Vice President gave financial assistance to the 22 fisherfolk from San Jose, Occidental Mindoro who were in a fishing boat hit by a Chinese ship in the West Philippine Sea.
Robredo also initiated a medical mission in partnership with Oriental Mindoro Rep. Alfonso Umali to give free medicine and medical check-ups to different communities in Oriental Mindoro. [End]
