VP Leni bats for underground power, comms lines
Presidential aspirant Vice President Leni Robredo on Tuesday, December 21, said she will make underground power and communication lines a priority in her infrastructure development agenda if elected President to ensure every affected area’s resilience even after a destructive typhoon such as ‘Odette’.
“One realization from the series of very strong typhoons which hit our country is that our next priority infrastructure development agenda should be putting electric and communication lines underground, particularly in typhoon-prone areas,” Robredo said in a Facebook post.
She said this would be more cost-effective, taking into consideration the money spent for the rehabilitation of above-ground electric and communication lines and posts when they are toppled and destroyed by typhoons.
Robredo added that the lack of power and communication services in the aftermath of typhoons “adversely affect the economy and business and the extension of health, hygiene and sanitation services is greatly hampered.” The conduct of classes, both virtual and face-to-face, is also affected, she said.
Robredo said that with his district located in the typhoon belt, Albay Congressman Edcel Lagman has already been pushing for underground power and communication lines.
“It is high time to start giving it very serious consideration,” the Vice President said.
Super typhoon ‘Odette’, described as one of the strongest storms of 2021, barreled through parts of the Visayas and Mindanao a week before Christmas and practically isolated provinces due to the loss of power and phone connections.
“We have, on average, 20 typhoons a year. [End]
