VP Leni: OVP can partner with LGUs outside Metro Manila for pandemic response initiatives

VP Leni: OVP can partner with LGUs outside Metro Manila for pandemic response initiatives

Presidential aspirant Vice President Leni Robredo said on Tuesday, January 18, that her office can partner with local government units outside of Metro Manila that are experiencing surges in COVID-19 cases to mitigate its spread in their provinces through different pandemic response initiatives.

Robredo said the Office of the Vice President (OVP) has received requests from different LGUs to bring the Swab Cab, Vaccine Express, and Bayanihan E-Konsulta programs to their areas.

“Gumagawa na kami ngayon ng mga initiatives kung papano matutulungan ‘yung mga probinsya na nakakaranas din ng surge. So, wherever na willing ‘yung LGU to partner with us, dinadala namin doon,” Robredo told reporters in an interview when she visited the OVP Swab Cab in Makati City.

The OVP Swab Cab offers free COVID-19 antigen testing to anyone who wants to find out if they have been infected with the coronavirus. If they test positive, the OVP provides them with a COVID-19 care kit and brings them to an isolation facility. Robredo believes that free COVID-19 testing should be made available to the public to mitigate the spread of the disease.

The Vaccine Express, on the other hand, provides free COVID-19 vaccination. It offers incentives such as bags of rice, relief packages, and health kits to encourage people to get vaccinated.

The Bayanihan E-Konsulta is the free teleconsultation project of the OVP. It is available only in Metro Manila, Bulacan, Laguna, Cavite, and Rizal, but Robredo said her office is now looking for ways to replicate the teleconsultation program in other parts of the country, which should also include giving out COVID-19 care kit packages.

Robredo also reiterated that she has asked the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to allow her office to continue with its COVID-19 pandemic response even during the official campaign period which begins on February 8.

“Humingi kami ng exemption from COMELEC na ‘yung mga COVID-related na mga ginagawa ng office, payagan kami to continue even after Feb. 8, lalo na kasi surge ngayon,” she said.

Robredo said her office wrote the COMELEC earlier this month to ask for the exemption and allow them to help during this time that COVID-19 cases continue to rise. [End]
