VP Leni: Turncoatism weakens political party system

VP Leni: Turncoatism weakens political party system

Vice President Leni Robredo emphasized anew that turncoatism for political convenience weakens the political party system in the country.

At the second installment of the Pilipinas Debates 2022: The Turning Point on April 3, Robredo— a known advocate for the institutionalization of a principle-based political party system—reiterated her earlier proposal that she will push for the passage of a legislation that would prevent politicians from jumping from one party to another for the sake of political convenience.

'Yun 'yung umpisa,” she added.

For as long as the country allows turncoatism, Robredo said we cannot expect to have a strong political party system in the country.

“Habang ina-allow natin 'yung turncoatism, habang ina-allow natin 'yung palipat-lipat na partido, hindi natin maaasahan na lalakas 'yung mga political parties kasi puwede siyang i-dispose at any time,” shee said.

As another measure to strengthen the system, Robredo said the multi-party system must be revisited to see what would work better for our current political landscape.

Robredo said.

Robredo added that the government should also ensure that those violating rules in an election campaign are held accountable.

[End]
