VP Leni’s Team Goes Back to Agutaya

Office of the Vice President 07 June 2017

The Office of the Vice President (OVP) returns to Agutaya, Palawan for a 4-day visit for the turnover of educational toys, motorized boats, and school bags and school supplies.

On June 2 after a 16-hour boat ride from Iloilo, Angat Buhay opened a playspace in the Daycare Center of Brgy. Poblacion. In collaboration with Angat Buhay partner, Philippine Toy Library, 38 kids will be able to enjoy a safe space to play with a slide, seesaw, scooters, clay sets and other occupational toys. The toys and school supplies were brought by the RAF International Forwarding Inc., one of the OVP’s steadfast partners in shipping materials to the far flung provinces in the Philippines.

The following day, through the STC Bangka ni Teresa initiative of Angat Buhay partner St. Theresa’s College Quezon City Alumni Association, motorized boats were distributed to the fisherfolk of Brgy. Algeciras. Fishermen who once relied on borrowing fishing vessels for their daily income now are able to maximize their earnings to feed their families.

On the same day, OVP visited Brgy. Diit with Angat Buhay partner Andres Soriano Foundation to monitor the 34 weavers who were given livelihood training on buri and pandan weaving. Through this partnership, they were connected to the nearby resort where their hat and bag products are currently being sold.

The last day of the visit in Agutaya was devoted to the turnover of school supplies two elementary schools in Agutaya.

On June 5, One hundred school bags containing notebooks, folders, writing papers, pens, other writing materials, and black rubber shoes were distributed to Matarawis and Maracanao Elementary Schools. Through the partnership of Children’s Hour, students who had limited access to school materials are now ready for the upcoming school year.

Angat Buhay focuses its efforts on the farthest, poorest communities in the Philippines. Agutaya is among the first 50 pilot LGU partners of Angat Buhay that continues to collaborate with private partners with the goal of improving the quality of life of the whole community.

While the turnovers were ongoing, the OVP was also conducting relief operations to aid those affected by the Marawi Crisis.

As of June 1, 7,867 food packs were released to affected communities in Iligan City.
